We are an ‘Active School Flag’ School.

Presentation of Active School Flag (ASF) – Friday April 5th 2019

Scoil Úna Naofa was awarded an ‘Active School Flag’ in 2018. This followed a great effort by the whole school to increase our physical Activity, some of which can be seen on the website.

The ‘Active School Flag’ is a national award for both primary and post primary school, and achieving a flag is a great honour for any school. ‘ASF’ is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland.

We were delighted to welcome Michael Darragh MacAuley to the school to present us with our award. Michael Darragh has been a stalwart of Dublin Gaelic Football for many years, and is a former primary teacher. He was treated to a lovely concert from some of our pupils, as well as a display of GAA skills from Mr Kiely’s class with our GAA GPO, Jonathon Rock. Jonathon is an uncle to another Dublin great – Dean Rock.

On Thursday, the school had rehearsed the ceremony in the front yard, but the weather did not oblige us on Friday. Ken, our caretaker, moved all the equipment and chairs back to the Big Hall, and thanks to great team-work from our pupils and teachers – the show went on. We were delighted that so many of our parents came to the ceremony, and we managed to find seats for most people.

Michael Darragh spoke to the audience before presenting us with our Flag. He said that it is very important to stay active – for both young and old. He mentioned some of the activities we did to achieve our flag. As well as our regular PE curriculum, the school ran initiatives such as ‘Run around Ireland’, ‘Run to Rio’, ‘Our Exercise Bike’, ‘Walk & Talk’, ’10 @ 10’ and many more. He spoke about the importance of sport – not just for physical activity, but for forming life-long friendships. Many of his good friends are people that he played with on school and club teams.
After that, our senior classes went out to the yard to watch the raising of our ‘Active Schools Flag’. Many of our school community were in attendance, and many got a chance to speak to Michael Darragh, with a few taking photos also.

Afterwards, refreshments were served in the small hall, which gave people a chance to warm up and chat.
All of this would not have been possible without the great effort of our ‘Active Committee’. Thank you to Éabha & Conor from 6th Class, along with Ms Nulty, Mr Malone, Ms Waldron and of course Mr Shanahan, who kept coming up with new exciting ideas to keep us active, and continue to do so – Thank You All!
